In his play Taking Steps, Alan Ayckbourne follows what happens when a wife decides
to leave her boorish husband, and her brother tries to woo back his jilting fiance.
Hard-drinking bucket manufacturing tycoon Roland Crabbe is about to buy a house
– a reputedly haunted former brothel – from builder Leslie Bainbridge who is on the
brink of financial disaster. His wife Elizabeth, a former not very good dancer, is
planning to walk out on him, leaving her brother Mark to pick up the pieces when
Roland finds her leaving note. However Mark's fiancée Kitty is hiding in the attic
and Roland’s solicitor Tristram who is dealing with the house sale ends up in bed
accidentally with Elizabeth who .. well, you will just have to come and see it!
